Claiming Shoes on Tax

August 3, 2023

Can i claim my shoes on my Tax

Shoes, socks and stockings are generally not deductible and are considered every day wear.

In limited circumstances, you can claim a deduction for shoes, socks and stockings if they are an essential part of a distinctive compulsory uniform. Their color, style, and type must be specified in your employer’s uniform policy.

Shoes Tips and Traps:

  • Shoes, socks and stockings aren’t considered part of a non-compulsory work uniform2.
  • You can’t claim a deduction if your employer pays for or reimburses you for expenses you incur for work clothing1.

Example in which this limited case may apply:

If you are an air stewardess or a nurse and your employer has a uniform policy that specifies the color, style, and type of shoes that must be worn as part of the uniform, then you may be able to claim a deduction for the cost of those shoes.
