Dodgy Deductions Can Delay Tax Returns

July 24, 2023

Make sure your Tax Refund doesn't get Delayed

In this wonderful world of high technology, the ATO are now able to use sophisticated analytics to highly scrutinize taxpayers and what they claim.

Big Brother is watching...

What does this mean?

The ATO have been collecting taxpayer’s data from all kinds of occupations who are earning similar incomes and are in similar roles. From there, they compile this data to determine an average amount of claims for those occupations and roles.

If your claims fall outside their benchmarks, this may raise a red flag with the ATO which could result in them conducting an audit to investigate further.

In some cases, this is cause for alarm, but if you have kept records for everything you have claimed then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. You can see our record keeping blog for more information on record keeping.

If you don’t have the correct records to back up your claims, there is a high possibility that the ATO will not only have you repay back any refunds already received (if your tax return is already lodged), but they may also remove those claims from your tax return as well as apply penalties, fines and general interest charges to your account.

To put it simply, it would be one very expensive mistake to make.

So, when completing your Gotax Online etax return, remember to be honest, only claim back what you have actually spent for work and keep all of your receipts and invoices.
