Your Records can hold up your Tax Refund

July 24, 2023

What can delay my Tax Refund?

There are many reasons why the processing of your tax return may be delayed. One of the most common reasons is that clients' records have changed during the year and haven't been updated with the ATO.

Examples of details that are required to be updated include name changes or address changes.

If you have recently changed your personal details and did not advise us, your income tax return could be held up until the details are updated.

Failing to update your personal details with the ATO may result in your tax return being rejected or the process being delayed until the ATO can confirm the information you provided is accurate.

If the ATO can’t identify you, they won’t accept your tax return –
your details must be updated.

When you complete your GoTax etax return, you can change simple details like your address and phone number, however,  to change your name or surname, you'll need to contact the ATO directly.

We suggest that prior to lodging your tax return, give the ATO a call on 13 28 61 and advise them of the changes to your personal details.

Make sure that before you call them you have at least one of the following identifying documents:

  • Full Australian birth certificate – not an extract
  • Australian marriage certificate
  • Australian change of name certificate

If you have the relevant identity documents, the process to change your personal details should be simple.

Once your personal details have been updated, you'll be able to proceed with the process of lodging your tax return.
